Reminder: Retailer obligations for MUP compliance

All Scottish businesses selling alcohol products to the public are required to charge at least 65p per unit of alcohol. This requirement has applied to all product sales since 30th September 2024.

To support members with the change, SGF has provided additional materials to help train staff and raise public awareness of the increase in price, such as in-store posters, self-edge labelling and a staff training record.

MUP formula: The price per unit (£0.65) x the strength of alcohol (ABV) x the volume in litres (always ensure to round up to the nearest whole number (e.g. £13.121 is rounded up to £13.13).

Here are some common examples of products sold in stores (strength may vary, please check the price of all your products):

Subsequent to legislation which came into force on 1st May 2018, MUP is a mandatory condition for all licenced premises in Scotland. Failure to sell alcohol above the MUP is breach of a condition of your premises licence and constitutes a criminal offence. All products must be compliant to the MUP.
