Introducing the Food Standards Scotland Strategy 2026–2031
Food Standards Scotland has published its new Strategy for 2026–2031, setting out a vision for a food system that is safe, authentic and healthier, and one that Scotland can continue to trust. The strategy reinforces the organisation’s commitment to protecting public health and helping consumers make informed choices. Over the next five years, it will focus on preventing foodborne illness, improving dietary health, and ensuring that food produced and sold in Scotland meets high standards of safety, authenticity and transparency.
FSS will work closely with local authorities, government, public health bodies and industry to modernise the delivery of food law. By improving consistency, strengthening assurance and supporting responsible businesses, it aims to create a regulatory system that is effective and sustainable. A key priority is enhancing the use of data and digital tools to identify risks more quickly, respond with agility, and communicate clearly with the public and stakeholders.
The strategy also recognises wider pressures shaping Scotland’s food system, including climate change, emerging technologies and the need for resilient public services. Delivery will depend on collaboration, with FSS seeking to work in partnership to achieve a food environment that benefits everyone in Scotland.
