UK Government Announces New Measures on Price Gouging During Crises
The UK Government has announced plans to introduce a new framework aimed at strengthening oversight of excessive price increases during periods of economic disruption or crisis.
Under the proposals, the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) and other regulators would receive enhanced investigatory powers intended to help identify and respond more quickly to instances of alleged price gouging - where prices are considered to have risen to unjustifiably high levels during supply shocks or emergencies.
The measures could allow regulators to publicly highlight firms where pricing practices are deemed concerning, including publishing information on changes in profit margins and the reasons behind those increases.
