Retail Crime is now one of the most significant and harrowing problems our sector must face, with the SGF’s Crime Report for 2024/25 showing that shop theft and vandalism is now costing the independent convenience sector £102.7 million per annum (just under £20,000 per store). This of course doesn’t even touch upon the verbal and physical abuse and violence these retailers and their staff encounter daily.
With a number of retailers expressing their significant frustration with the fact that very little seems to be done to combat the issue, even pointing to the possibility that this may drive them to give up their businesses, we at SGF are taking action by hosting our annual SGF Crime & Security Seminar and once again raising concerns with those with the powers to take decisive action to tackle the problem. This year we will be joined by Scotland’s Community Safety Minister, Siobhan Brown MSP, along with DCI Jackie Knight who leads up Police Scotland’s Retail Crime Taskforce, and speakers from within the industry and security industry to offer guidance on helping with crime prevention.
