Plans for charge on single-use beverage cup on hold

The Scottish Government consultation on introducing a mandatory minimum charge on single-use disposable beverage cups in Scotland has been delayed.

The proposed charge was due cover all types of disposable cups, regardless of the single-use material they are made from or the drinks they are used for. The Consultation which closed in November 20204, set out their initial intentions to make regulations to implement the charge by the end of 2025.

Regulations will not be made this year as the Scottish Government have said they are taking time to fully consider the issues raised in the consultation to ensure the charge is effective, proportionate, and fair. They will also continue develop additional measures to promote the uptake of reusable alternatives.
