Invitation to participate in research on the Protection of Workers Act – Uni of Lancashire

SGF has been asked to share this survey from the University of Lancashire.

This research invites Scottish retailers to take part in a study exploring the impact of the Protection of Workers (Retail and Age Restricted Goods and Services) (Scotland) Act 2021This legislation was introduced to address rising levels of violence, threats, and abuse faced by retail staff, particularly during age verification duties. While over 2,000 convictions have been recorded under the Act, concerns remain about enforcement, underreporting, and operational challenges.

This research aims to evaluate whether the Act has improved worker safety and acted as a deterrent to retail crime. It will examine retailers’ experiences, perceptions of the law, and its influence on reporting practices, security investments, and staff training. Your insights will help identify gaps in enforcement and inform future policy and support for the sector.
