First Minister of Scotland opens GAP Group North East world leading environmentally friendly fridge reprocessing facilities near Perth, Scotland

Our colleagues at GAP Group North East would like to share their recent press release on the opening of their new fridge reprocessing facility.

John Swinney, the First Minister of Scotland opened the new GAP Group North East fridge reprocessing facilities at the Bin Eco-Park near Perth. The new facility is designed to have a 100 per cent net zero carbon footprint providing Scotland with a powerful statement of intent towards its green obligations.

The new £15m facility will achieve a 100% net zero carbon footprint as it will be powered by the EcoPark’s own renewable energy grid and the Eco-Park, operated by Binn Group one of Scotland’s largest independent providers of integrated recycling and waste management services, will also assist with the safe disposal of outputs such as fridge gasses and PUR (polyurethane) which will be used as an energy from waste feedstock.

This will bring together fridge recycling services across Scotland and the rest of the UK and significantly increase capacity across GAP’s two fridge reprocessing plants in Gateshead and now Perthshire to more than 1.3m fridges over 40% of the UK’s total annual requirement.

Peter Moody Group Chief Executive of GAP Group North East, parent company of GAP Alba its Scottish arm, said: “This is a hugely significant milestone for GAP Alba, and all our partners as we look to provide the most environmentally sound and technologically advanced solution to fridge reprocessing in Scotland and the UK.

“I’m honoured that our environmentally focused growth plans have dovetailed perfectly with Scotland’s desire to be on the front foot with their net zero commitments and wider green obligations. The fact that First Minister John Swinney is attending in person is testament to that dedication by the Scottish government.”

First Minister of Scotland John Swinney said: “Scotland’s transition to net zero is not only a moral obligation, but can provide economic opportunities to communities across the country

“The opening of GAP Alba’s new facility is an excellent example of this, bringing over 50 good, green jobs to the local area.

“It is a tangible benefit of our efforts to tackle the climate crisis, and aligns with my government’s mission to ensure Scotland is at the forefront of the green tech revolution.”
